Choosing a QR plaque material: brass, stainless steel, or ceramic

How brass, stainless steel, and ceramic QR plaques hold up outdoors — durability, scanner readability, cost, and which one to put on a headstone.

A QR code for a headstone has one job: to still scan on a wet Tuesday in twenty years. That is a materials question before it is a design question. Three materials get used for memorial plaques — brass, stainless steel, and ceramic — and they fail in different ways.

The two things that actually matter

  • Contrast. A phone camera needs a clear dark-on-light (or light-on-dark) difference between the code and its background. Polished, mirror-like finishes throw glare across the code and are the single most common reason a plaque will not scan.
  • Durability of the marking, not the plate. Almost any metal plate survives a cemetery. What degrades is the printed, etched, or painted code on top of it.

Brass

Brass is the traditional monument material and the one families ask for by name. Cast or engraved brass lasts indefinitely, but bare brass patinas to a brown-green over a few years, which slowly eats the contrast the scanner depends on. It also polishes to a mirror, so a sunlit brass plaque can glare badly.

  • Best for: matching existing brass hardware on an older monument.
  • Watch for: patina reducing contrast, glare from polished faces, and periodic cleaning that the family has to remember.
  • Typical cost: the most expensive of the three for a small plaque.

Stainless steel (and anodized aluminium photo plates)

For outdoor QR codes this is the default recommendation. A laser-marked or photo-anodized plate — the process used for industrial asset tags rated for decades of outdoor exposure — puts the code inside the metal surface rather than on top of it. It cannot be scratched off, does not fade in UV, and shrugs off freeze-thaw cycles and pressure washing.

  • Ask for a brushed or matte finish, never mirror-polished — matte kills glare and scans reliably in direct sun.
  • Stainless will not patina, so contrast stays where it started.
  • Typical cost: mid-range, and the best cost-per-year of the three.

Ceramic and porcelain

Fired ceramic gives the sharpest, highest-contrast code of any material — the image is glazed into the tile, so it is fade-proof and completely matte. The trade-off is impact: ceramic chips and cracks, and a cracked tile through the code area can make it unscannable. In freeze climates, water that gets behind a tile can pop it off the stone.

  • Best for: sheltered niches, columbarium walls, indoor mausoleums, and mild climates.
  • Watch for: frost damage, mower and trimmer strikes at ground level, and vandalism.

Size, placement, and the quiet zone

  1. Keep the code at least 1.25 inches (32 mm) square. Two inches is comfortable for older phones and shaky hands.
  2. Leave a blank margin — the quiet zone — of at least four modules on every side. Engraving text right up to the code is a common cause of scan failure.
  3. Mount it at waist height or on the upper face of a flat marker if you can. Ground-level plaques collect mud and grass clippings.
  4. Angle matters less than glare. A slightly tilted matte plate outperforms a perfectly flat shiny one.

Test before it goes on the stone

Print the code at final size on plain paper, tape it outdoors, and scan it in bright sun and in dusk light with the oldest phone in the family. If it hesitates on paper, it will hesitate in metal. The safe default: a matte, laser-marked stainless plate, two inches square, with a generous quiet zone.

Cemetery approval

Most cemeteries treat a QR plaque as monument hardware and require written approval before installation, especially for anything adhered to an existing stone.
